Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves the insertion of very fine, almost hair-thin needles into specific points in the body. These points are selected based on the individual's diagnosis and constitution. It is generally not painful. It is actually quite pleasant and relaxing. Acupuncture can treat so many ailments as well as be used to maintain wellness. The basic theory is that wherever you have pain or poor function in the body, you have stagnation or lack of circulation of blood and energy, qi. Activating specific points located along qi pathways known as meridians, helps to resume proper flow. By circulating qi and blood, your body is able to heal these areas of pain or poor function.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
A major part of Traditional Chinese Medicine is herbal medicine. Chinese herbs are prescribed also based on individual constitutions and diagnoses. These prescribed formulas are taken as a tea made from either raw or granular herbs. Some formulas are available in capsule or pill form as well. Topical herbal treatments are in the form of salves, lotions, liquids and patches. Unlike pharmaceuticals, side-effects are not common with ingestion of Chinese herbs as long as they are correctly prescribed and used as directed. Most side-effects can be avoided with proper prescription and making minor adjustments to the formula as needed. Herbs can be amazingly effective at treating many conditions including: digestive issues, insomnia, menopausal symptoms, night sweats, anxiety, high blood pressure, stress, allergies and upper respiratory infections.
Tuina, Cupping & Guasha
Chinese Body Work is the physical medicine approach for treating conditions. Tuina is a form a therapeutic massage or body work where the practitioner uses varying techniques to activate acupressure points, open meridians, increase blood circulations and break up adhesions in the muscles and tissues. Cupping is the therapy of applying cups made of almost any substance to the skin with suction. Most commonly, cups are made of glass, plastic, and rubber. There are many cupping techniques to treat a variety of conditions. It can provide almost immediate relief for tense and sore muscles, pain from partial dislocation of joints, headaches, etc by breaking up adhesions and increasing blood flow to release tight muscles, tendons and ligaments. It also is used to treat colds and flu by stimulating the immune system. Guasha is a dermal friction technique and works much like cupping. A tool is used to rub or massage the affected areas or to activate the meridians.
